Parental Emotion Socialization: Increasing Socio-emotional Competence and Reducing Maladaptive Behaviors in Low-Income Urban Children. The primary objective of the study is to demonstrate that positive parental emotion socialization strategies are associated with positive socio-emotional competence and negative, maladaptive behaviors in low-income urban families. We will assess parents' emotion-related beliefs and behaviors, children's socio-emotional competence (emotion knowledge, emotion regulation) and maladaptive outcomes (externalizing and internalizing behaviors) with pre-school children and their parents. The session will last approximately 1.5 hour. You may visit us in the Lab or we can visit you and your family at your home! Parents will complete questionnaires regarding their emotion-related beliefs, parents and children will discuss 2 emotionally-laden memories and 1 neutral memory to assess parents' socialization behaviors. Children's emotion knowledge, emotion regulation, externalizing and internalizing behaviors and their physiological regulatio will be indexed by cardiac vagal tone. Sign Up »
Emotional and Religious Cognitive Appraisals in Trauma Adaptation. To examine how emotions reflect other domains, I am initiating a new program of research with Dr. May Chen and Dr. Jean Kubeck that bridges emotions and coping, and physiological regulation. Our first project will examine how beliefs about your emotions modulate coping. We will use multiple measures, including a written narrative task and neural physiological data. Sign Up »
