Valuations in Algebraic Geometry

This talk is an introduction to valuation theory. The simplest example of a valuation is given by the order of a power series with real or complex coefficients. The interest in this classical subject arises from Algebraic Geometry and in particular from the theory of resolution of singularities.

After giving the necessary background and definitions we give examples of valuations that arise naturally in Algebraic Geometry.

If time permits we introduce generating sequences, which are a very powerful tool in the study of valuations and we discuss some recent work. (pdf)
