This talk will be a discussion of set theory aimed at a general mathematical audience.  I will examine some of the motivating questions of the subject, especially that of infinite cardinalities.   The relationship of set theory to the rest of mathematics will be considered, including the notion of set theory as a possible foundation for mathematics. Independence from the axioms of set theory, perhaps the most important area of current research, will be discussed, as well as the construction known as forcing, a primary tool in this research.

If time permits I will describe some of my own research related to the power and limitations of forcing.
