TEACHER OPPORTUNITY CORPS PROGRAM
Purpose
The Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) is a program funded by the New York State Education Department, Bureau of Professional Career Opportunity Programs. The purpose of the program is to enhance the preparation of teachers and prospective teachers in addressing the learning needs of students at risk of truancy, academic failure, or dropping out of school; and to increase the participation rate of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals in teaching careers.Who is Eligible?
- Pre-service Technology Education Students and Substitute Vocational Assistants ( SVAs ) who are enrolled in internship or student teaching courses at City Tech.
- First level of priority is given to African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, and Native American Indian or Alaskan Native teachers.
- Second level priority is given to any individual economically disadvantaged (in accordance with the criteria established in statute for the Teacher Opportunity Corps program).
- Third level priority is given to any individual whether or not historically underrepresented in teaching or economically disadvantaged.
What are the benefits of Participating in TOC?

TOC will:
- Provide activities that will enable you to improve your writing and other academic skills.
- Strengthen your professional teaching skills through customized seminars that address the needs of at-risk students.
- Pay tuition for a 3-credit course each year of your participation towards the B.Sc. degree. *
- Loan to you a laptop computer that you and your school mentor could use to write lesson plans and other classroom presentation materials at your school site.
- Provide you and your school mentor stipends for participation in workshops.
- Provide free NYSTCE ( LAST, ATS-W, and CST ) test preparation workshops as well as free NYSTCE test preparation guides.
Program Services
TOC provides specialized coursework to address the needs of at-risk students; supplemental field placements at low performing schools, and graduates are provided mentoring during the first year of teaching. TOC projects also provide support services such as counseling, advising and summer enrichment experiences.
Requirement:
Participation in scheduled program activities usually on the College campus including meetings, workshops and seminars.
