  THE THREE STAGES OF PRINT PRODUCTION  
     
 

PREPRESS

• prepare editorial and ad materials

• build the pages

• make film and plates (or plates only)

PRESS

• "makeready" the press

• "come up to color"; get OK to print

• print signatures

• cut and fold signatures in line

POSTPRESS

• collate, gather, and bind signatures

• apply "versioning" and selective binding

• prepare finished pieces for retail sale or for distribution via postal entry and/or single-copy sales
