SHEET SIZES are given as
width times length: a 25x38" sheet is 25 inches wide and 38 inches
long. In North America, paper sizes are based upon the standard 8 1/2 x
11" sheet, universally used in photocopiers, fax machines, and laser
printers.
Larger sheets are multiples of basic size. For example,
an 11 x 17" sheet is two 8 1/2 x 11" sheets side by side. Above 17 x
22", the multiples aren't exact because extra space is allowed for
gripper edges, trims, bleeds, and color bars.
COMMONLY USED SHEET SIZES
and their typical products include:
• 11 x 17" for letterhead (printed two-up), four-page
newsletters, and covers for 8 1/2 x 11" booklets.
• 17 x 22" for four-up letterhead, accordion- folded
brochures, and eight-page newsletters.
• 25 x 35" for 16-page signatures with no bleeds, small
trims, and narrow color bars.
• 25 x 38" for 16-page signatures with bleeds, large
trim areas, wide color bars, and bindery margins (called "laps").
