  ELECTRONIC INK (III): Operation

• positive (+) and negative (-) charges applied to the surface cause oppositely charged chips to rise or fall, forming discernible patterns

• microcapsules are suspended in a liquid carrier medium, the same as pigments are suspended in a "vehicle" in conventional inks; this is what makes them "printable"

• tiny "plastic transistors," embedded in the printed sheets, receive electrical charges and transmit them to the microcapsules
