Admission into Career and Technical Teacher Education

Admission into the Career and Technical Teacher Education program is on a year-round basis. Students may enter the program as freshman if they meet the general college criteria. Alternatively, students may transfer from City Tech's associate degree programs before or after completing the degree. Students from other colleges may apply for admission as transfer students. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required to transfer into, maintain enrollment in and graduate from the program.

Occupational Experience Verification

All prospective students of the program must be prepared to provide documentation of appropriate work experience in the occupational area for which they will ultimately seek state certification. The duration of full-time occupational experience that will be required depends on the student's previous educational background as follows:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent - 4 years of experience
  • Associate Degree - 2 years of experience

Students who do not meet the work experience requirements but who received appropriate occupational training through a vocational high school or an associate degree program will be required to have a plan for acquiring the required work experience prior to completing a total of 30 credits of coursework or applying for the Initial Certificate.

Degree-seeking students must also satisfy the occupational competency requirement in order to be eligible for graduation. The occupational competency requirement may be satisfied in any of the following ways:
  • possessing an approved national or state license in the relevant occupation (for example, New York State (NYS) Registered Nursing (RN) license, NYS Dental Assisting license, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Plant license or the New York City (NYC) regular teaching license NYC regular teaching license in occupational subject must have been issued prior to June 1991); or

Given that New York City teachers cannot receive a regular teaching license until they receive State certification, courses are sequenced with students' career needs in mind. • Initial Certificate - an associate's degree or its equivalent and passing the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations ( NYSTCE ). Content Specialty Test (CST) and Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written (ATS-W).
