Joint Mathematics and Physics Colloquium

In this talk we will explore some of the connections between group theory (a branch of abstract algebra) and formal language theory (a branch of theoretical computer science). In particular we will look at a language, known as the "word problem", that arises in the study of infinite groups, and we will look at how the structure of this language can tell us something about the structure of infinite groups.
